Every homeowner should have a small space heater to help fend off a morning chill or to stay comfortable while sitting on the couch in the evening. But, it's so easy to misuse these small appliances!
If you have a space heater that you bring out from time-to-time, the team at All Seasons Air Conditioning & Heating urges you to use it safely. Every year, there are stories in the news about fires that have started from damaged or overused heaters. To help ensure this doesn't happen to you, we've put together a few practical space heater tips to follow:
Be Educated About Using It
Every space heater comes with a user's manual, instructions, and other documentation. Read through these papers carefully to know how to use your appliance the proper way. Some will also come with a warranty card. If you have spent a decent amount of money on your space heater, consider filling it out and submitting it to activate your warranty.
Check the Condition of the Heater Before Use
If you keep the space heater in storage part of the year, always inspect it before turning it on. Check that the outer casing is intact and in good condition. Make sure the cord and plug are also intact with no exposed wires or fraying. Don't use a damaged space heater!
Practice Proper Space Heater Placement
The space heater should be placed on a flat, level, heat-resistant surface. Ideally, this is ceramic or concrete flooring. Avoid placing the heater in high traffic areas or where children and pets can knock it over. Set it up three feet, at a minimum, away from the wall and any other flammable objects.
Remember to plug it into the wall outlet and not a power cord. Keep this outlet dedicated for the use of your heater. Don't plug any other electrical devices into it at the same time. This can draw too much power and cause your electrical outlet to overload.
Use as a Supplement, Not a Furnace Replacement
Space heaters are not meant to run 24/7, nor are they capable of heating the entire home. This is an easy way to cause overheating and increase the risk of a fire. Space heaters are meant to be a supplement to your home heating system. Use them on especially chilly days when you don't want to run up the heating bill. Or, use them on cool fall and spring days when you don't want to run the HVAC system.
